MIKE : And after that, I come home and eat a big breakfast. How about you?

JULIE : Oh, on my day off, I just watch TV all day. I guess I’m a real couch potato!

B: It's approximately two kilometres away.
A: Is Edinburgh far from London?
B: Yes, it is. It's about an eight hour drive.
Contoh di atas menunjukkan cara memberikan penjelasan kepada orang lain untuk mencapai suatu tempat dan jarak tempuhnya - seberapa jauh atau dekat.
Pada contoh pertama 'go straight on' berarti jalan lurus, dan 'first on the right' berarti belok kanan yang pertama.

Contoh kedua terdapat ungkapan 'about five minutes' walk away' artinya sekitar lima menit berjalan kaki.
Untuk menjelaskan jarak, anda bisa mengatakan dalam bentuk waktu - minutes away – atau dalam kilometer – kilometres away.
Contoh lainnya:
A: Excuse me. Can you tell me where the bank is?
B: Certainly. Go straight on and it’s first on the right.
Dalam contoh tersebut, orang yang memberikan petunjuk arah cara mencapai suatu bank mengatakan: 'it’s first on the right' - maksudnya adalah bank yang dicari adalah gedung pertama yang berada di sebelah kanan.

Beberapa cara menjelaskan kepada orang lain untuk berbelok antara lain:
Take the first right, berarti belok kanan yang pertama.
Go straight on then take the second right, berarti jalan lurus terus kemudian belok kanan yang kedua.
Take the third left, berarti belok kiri yang ketiga.

Beberapa contoh di atas menunjukkan beberapa cara menanyakan arah tujuan Anda.
Jika Anda perlu bertanya kepada orang lain mengenai arah, katakan how do I get to dan diikuti dengan tempat tujuan Anda.
Jangan lupa, bertanyalah dengan sopan dengan cara menambahkan kata excuse me.
Misalnya, Excuse me, how do I get to the station? Bagaimana saya mencapai stasiun?
Atau Anda bisa juga mengatakan excuse me, could you please tell me the way to the station?

B: Yes, and it’s very expensive too!
A: What’s your home like?
B: It’s quite small but very comfortable. 

Orang-orang dalam percakapan tadi berbicara tentang negara, kota, dan rumah mereka.
Pada bagian pertama orang tersebut bertanya tentang kota lawan bicaranya "What’s your city like?" – seperti apakah kota Anda?
Kemudian orang tersebut menjawab "It’s very big and dirty" – sangat besar dan kotor.
Pada percakapan kedua, pertanyaannya adalah "What’s your home like?" – seperti apakah rumah Anda?
Dan jawabannya "It’s quite small but very comfortable" – agak kecil namun sangat nyaman.
Jika Anda tertarik untuk menanyakan tentang negara seseorang, pertanyaan yang Anda ajukan adalah what is your country like?
Jadi cara menanyakan tentang suatu tempat atau benda, yaitu what is lalu sebutkan nama tempat atau benda yang anda ingin tanyakan dan akhiri dengan kata like, misalnya what is the weather like? - seperti apakah cuacanya? atau what is your job like? - seperti apakah pekerjaan Anda?

A: Would you like the special three-course dinner?

Di hampir seluruh wilayah dunia, orang-orang makan tiga kali sehari, yaitu breakfast - makan pagi, lunch - makan siang, dinner - makan malam.
Dalam percakapan tadi Anda mendengar ungkapan a three-course meal, yang artinya menu makan yang terdiri dari tiga bagian.

Yang pertama adalah starter –hidangan pembuka, kedua main course – hidangan utama, dan yang ketiga adalah dessert – hidangan penutup atau bisa juga disebut pencuci mulut.
Saat Anda memesan makanan di restoran Anda bisa mengawali dengan meminta menu kepada pelayan restoran can I see a menu please? - bisakah saya melihat menu?
Kata can juga bisa Anda pakai saat meminta tagihan setelah Anda makan can I have the bill? - apakah saya bisa meminta tagihannya?
Sebelum Anda memutuskan untuk pergi ke suatu restoran, mungkin ada baiknya jika Anda memesan meja sebelum pergi ke sana, bagaimana caranya?
Anda bisa menelpon restoran tersebut dan bertanya can I book a table for tonight? - apakah saya bisa memesan meja untuk malam ini?
Dalam contoh percakapan di atas, terdapat kalimat can I have another drink?
Kata another bisa dipakai saat kita ingin menambah suatu pesanan, dalam contoh itu berarti tamu restoran ingin menambah pesanan minuman lagi.

Form of words

Among / Between

Among refers to a group of more than two people or things.

The tourists walked among the penguins.

Insects, birds, molluscs, frogs, worms and so on, live among the leaf litter.

Between refers to a group of two individual people or things.

They ran between the two finishing posts.

Juanita stood between Jose and Jacinta.

When used with ‘divide’ or ‘share’:

§  Among is used only with pural nouns or pronouns.

The food was shared among the refugees.

The children chose to divide the prize among themselves.

§   
   Between is used only when two people or things are involved.

The food was shared between the two refugees.

The twins chose to divide the prize between themselves.
